California State Polytechnic University Pomona Architecture Department is proud to present wHY Architecture’s Four Salvaged Boxes Exhibit on view September 27 through October 24 Opening Reception, Event and Discussion for "Four Boxes and Four Trees: The Farmer, The Architect, The Landscape Architect and The Chef" on October 1st, 6:30-8:30pm. This exhibition and event highlights a shared path to sustainability with dialogues across disciplines, from architecture, landscape architecture, food production and cooking. The 4 Salvaged Boxes documents the design approach and process wHY Architecture applied toward quality design and creative environmental sustainability, with focus on the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the first new art museum building in the world to receive the LEED Gold certification, and other current projects from wHY Architecture. The boxes are made with salvaged materials from the Museum’s construction. When closed, the boxes function as their own traveling crates, protecting their inner contents. When opened, the boxes unfold to present information about the sustainable design features of the Grand Rapids Art Museum and other innovative green projects, through the use of diagrams, models, material samples and videos. Made from recycled materials and designed to produce minimal waste in its installation and transportation, the boxes act as traveling “cabinets of curiosities,” transported from one place to another to interact with their audience. Other contributors to the exhibition and event include The Farm from the campus of Pomona College, the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies, and Biotrek, Department of Biological Sciences, both located on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona. Organically grown food will be provided for the opening reception and prepared during the event and panel discussion by a guest Chef. The event and panel discussion, led by Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture, will be an evening of provocative thought and interdisciplinary discussion on the current condition of our potential roles in an ecologically critical environment.
