Panel Discussion: Health Care Reform and its Impact on Health Care Architecture
This year, a distinguished panel of healthcare policy experts and nationally recognized healthcare architects will discuss the impact of healthcare reform on architectural design approaches to healthcare facilities. The points of interest will be the impact of healthcare reform on healthcare architecture, the future of healthcare palaces, and the role of sustainable design sustainable in the era of Healthcare Reform.
Moderating the discussion is Dr. A. Ray Pentecost, III, DrPH, FAIA, FACHA, LEED AP, Director of Healthcare Architecture for Clark Nexson Architecture & Engineering of Norfolk, Virginia, president of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Architects. For six years he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority in Richmond, Virginia and since 2004 he has served on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Old Dominion University College of Health Sciences in Norfolk, Virginia.
Panelists:
Dr. S. Ward Casscells, MD, is a distinguished Professor of Medicine and Public Health, Vice President for the External Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Texas at Houston and Senior Scholar at the Texas Heart Institute. As Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) Dr. Casscells reorganized a struggling $45B health and education system with 137,000 employees, 10 million patients and 900 clinics and hospitals in 100 countries into the #1 system in most surveys of patient satisfaction. Dr. Casscells has received the United States Department of Defense’s highest civilian award, the Distinguished Public Service Medal, the Surgeon General’s Medallion from the Department of Health and Human Services, The Army’s Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service and the Order of Military Medical Merit.
David F. Chambers, R.A., is the Director of Strategic Facility Initiatives of the University Research Institute (URI). Mr. Chambers was named one of the “Twenty who are making a difference” in Healthcare Design Magazine. His planning concepts have led to “one-stop” patient intake centers, integrated interventional services platforms and deeper implementation of acuity adaptable inpatient nursing platforms. He is the author of “Efficient Healthcare Overcoming Broken Paradigms.” His clients include the Veterans Affairs Agency, Sutter Health System, Sacramento, California and Catholic Health Initiatives. He was named a Research Fellow at the Rice University Building Institute in 2009.
Robin Guenther, FAIA, LEED AP is an internationally recognized distinguished expert in sustainable design. She is the founding principal of the award-winning firm Guenther 5 Architects in New York City, recently acquire by Perkins + Will. Her built work has been published both nationally and internationally. In 2005 she received The Center for Health Design’s Changemaker Award for her efforts to improve and support change in the healing environment. Guenther serves on the 2010 AIA Guidelines for Construction of Hospitals and Health Care Facilities Revision Committee and is on the advisory board of GreenSource magazine. She coordinates the Green Guide for Health Care, serves on LEED-HC committee and is a board member of Practice Greenhealth and the Center for Health Design. She is the co-author of “Sustainable Healthcare Architecture” with Gail Vittori, and author of “Sustainable Architecture for Health”.
Marshall B. Heins has served as Chief Facility Services Officer of Memorial Herman Health System in Houston, Texas since 1998 and is nationally recognized for his contribution to improving the quality of healthcare construction and project delivery processes. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Building Owners and Managers Association Houston Chapter (BOMA) and for the Thermal Energy Cooperative (TECO) at the Texas Medical Center. Mr. Heins has been published by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and written articles for numerous other healthcare publications. To date Mr. Heins has been responsible for the development of over $4B in healthcare facilities, medical office buildings and commercial real estate projects.
Dan Rectenwald, AIA, ACHA, NCARB is Principal and Director of HGA’s Minneapolis Healthcare Practice Group. HGA is an international architecture and engineering firm with offices throughout the United States. Mr. Rectenwald has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare master planning, medical planning and facility design. His clients include the Mayo Clinic, the University of California, San Francisco, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the University of Chicago and Stanford University Medical Centers and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. In addition to serving the interest of major health care providers, Mr. Rectenwald has worked with small community hospitals such as United Hospital District, Blue Earth and Fairview Lakes Medical Center Wyoming.
