World Toilet Summit

This annually organized event brings together non-profit organizations, government bodies, academia and other industry players to address the sanitation crisis that affects 2.6 billion people globally. The inaugural World Toilet Summit was held in Singapore and across the past 10 years we have seen the summit being held across the globe. Previous summits were held in Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Belfast, Moscow, Bangkok, New Delhi, Macau and Philadelphia. With the voices of influential leaders of the world coming together, the World Toilet Summit brings an opportunity to bring hope to the 40% of the world’s population needing proper sanitation. The World Toilet Summit 2011 will be held in Hainan province in November. This summit serves as a platform for discussion on the global sanitation crisis that is affecting billions of people globally. When Hainan International Tourism Island strategy was upgraded to a national strategy, there was a need for improvement of the facilities in public toilets. It has been viewed that improving the state public toilets will be the best chance and entry point for the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island. Tying in with the principle of simultaneous advancement of technology, the issue of insufficient public toilets can be addressed more forcefully and effectively. The theme for this year's summit is "Toilet Civilization: Health, Tourism, Quality of Life". World Toilet Organization together with Hainan Provincial Housing & Construction Department have launched the Toilet Design Award (TDA) to showcase the excellent designs which have been selected. These designs feature local characteristics, and also reflect the cultural identity of its origin countries and region. The architectural masterpieces incorporate low-cost and eco-friendly technology. These excellent works will be presented as one of the key subjects for discussion at the World Toilet Summit 2011.
