MARIANNE MUELLER AT MAMEG / MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA
IN COLLABORATION WITH JOHNSTON MARKLEE 9970 S Santa Monica Boulevard Beverly Hills, CA 90212 7-10pm, Friday January 23, 2009 To inaugurate the collaboration between Swiss artist Marianne Mueller and Los Angeles based architecture firm, Johnston Marklee, Mueller's video projection, The Flock will be presented at Mameg / Maison Martin Margiela, two shops designed by Johnston Marklee in Beverly Hills. In keeping with the firm's project-specific conceptual approach to architecture, Marianne Mueller will create a number of art works over the next year reflecting and documenting the buildings designed by Johnston Marklee. At Mameg / Maison Martin Margiela, Mueller will project a number of videos from her multi-media project The Flock (2000-2001). Shot on a rooftop in Brooklyn, the videos show a flock of pigeons, bred by an Italian-American in retirement, who continues the vanishing working-class tradition of pigeon-flying. Projected onto the walls of the building, her videos transform the flight of the pigeon into an ornamental choreography and seemingly dissolve the solidity of the façade, creating an illusion of translucency and spatial expansion Zurich-based Mueller is a photographer and video artist, whose casually elegant and precise work focuses on the human body, nature, and her quotidian urban surroundings. She has exhibited internationally and published a number of books. In her collaboration with Johnston Marklee, Mueller will seek novel ways of conveying the essence of architectural events that will transcend the generic formulas of architectural documentation. Johnston Marklee calls upon a network of innovative partners to shape each project. Recent collaborators include Takashi Murakami, Ai Weiwei, BLESS, Jack Pierson, Jeff Elrod, Martin Margiela, Philippe Parreno and Julius Shulman. An extensive selection of work by Marianne Mueller will be in the solo shows: THINGS-US-09 at Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels at ART LA 2009 from January 23-25 & in DREAM-US 09 at the Kim Light Gallery, Los Angeles from January 25- March 7, 2009 Johnston Marklee's work can be seen in the recently published, The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture and at www.johnstonmarklee.com.
