The design for the Fallen Journalists Memorial has been unveiled in Washington DC. Located near the National Mall, the scheme is being designed by Chicago-based John Ronan Architects.

Ronan’s design will see the scheme become the first memorial in the United States to be made entirely of glass. The emphasis on transparency in the memorial seeks to convey the ability of investigative journalists to shed light on issues, to clarify and comprehend, and to make the opaque clear.

300 glass pieces will be used in the memorial, each handcrafted to represent the unique stories of reporters. The elements are designed to be somewhat haphazard, indicating how independent data points can blend together to form a story.

“The Fallen Journalists Memorial design symbolizes the pursuit of truth, courage, and sacrifice in journalism,” according to the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation, which is overseeing the memorial. “The first memorial in the nation’s capital made almost entirely of glass, the innovative design forms a cylindrical space at the heart of the site, representing how disconnected facts come together to create a story.”

“The memorial offers multiple entry points, with all paths leading to a circular Remembrance Hall, where the First Amendment is inscribed on a central glass lens,” the foundation adds. “At night, up-lit glass elements emit a soft glow, with the Capitol dome visible, symbolizing journalism’s role in democracy.”

Construction of the memorial is expected to begin in 2026, for completion in 2028.

Love Ronan's work, but one has to ask how this will age, and how will they take into consideration skateboarders?
