Johnston Marklee founders Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee are curating a new exhibition at the L.A. branch of the Sean Kelly Gallery this fall that will showcase the brilliant building photography of Candida Höfer, the German-born winner of the 2024 Käthe Kollwitz Prize.
Europa / America will run from November 16th to January 11th, 2025. For the exhibition, the Los Angeles-based duo have "created a literal and metaphorical division within the gallery space, splitting it into two distinct halves, with one side showcasing Höfer's haunting photographs," says a press release.
The show will include a trove of 14 photographs taken between 1993 and 2015 and is inspired by Erich Mendelsohn’s 1929 text An Architectural Cross Section. Together, this "novel" grouping illustrates a compelling through-line present in Höfer’s oeuvre—each capturing how architecture can illuminate epochs and the attendant cultural histories of place. It follows last year's related Heaven on Earth exhibition at the gallery's New York City location that was curated by their Harvard GSD colleague Toshiko Mori.
An opening reception will take place on Saturday, November 16th from 5 to 7 PM. Johnston and Lee were also named winners of the 2024 Richard Neutra Award by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in September.
