The Australian Institute of Architects has honored 35 buildings as part of its 2024 National Architecture Awards. The winning schemes were chosen to “represent a new vanguard of Antipodean design that are true innovators, making lasting impacts on communities,” according to the institution.

The projects span new residential, community, and commercial projects, hailing from each Australian state and territory as well as one international location. Winning entries were chosen for attributes including sustainable design, heritage preservation, pedagogical design, adaptive reuse, material use, and community impact.

“In an increasingly divided Australia, this year’s winners show us architecture can be a vessel for social cohesion, with multiple examples of public buildings where thoughtful and welcoming design unites people, bringing disparate communities together,” said National Architecture Awards Jury Chair, Stuart Tanner about the winners. “The jury awarded multiple projects where connection to Country has been intrinsically included from the design consultation stage with thoughtful examples of cultural sensitivity and strong public outcomes; not just for First Nations people but for the community at large.”
