Stage 1 Finalists of urbanSHED Design Competition Announced

By Bustler Editors|

Monday, Oct 12, 2009

On October 7, a jury of nine esteemed design, engineering, and construction professionals met at AIANY/Center for Architecture to select the Stage I finalists of the urbanSHED International Design Competition. The competition challenges designers to conceptualize a cutting-edge sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians, improve the pedestrian experience – and make New York City even more attractive for generations to come.

The three finalist entries Tripod, urbanCLOUD, and Urban Umbrella will advance to Stage II, and further develop their designs with the assistance of a Technical Advisory Group. The jury selected three additional projects for honorable mention.

These are the three finalists:

Tripod: XChange Architects (Jonace Bascon, AIA, Derrick Choi, AIA, and Lynn Hsu, RA), Brookline, MA

urbanCLOUD: KNEstudio (Kevin Erickson, Dan Campbell, Mathew Strack, Johann Rischau, and Brodie Bricker), New York, NY

Urban Umbrella: Young Hwan Choi, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

And here are the three honorable mentions:

KIT-OF-PARTS: Cutsogeorge, Tooman & Allen Architects (Craig Tooman, Asaf Yogev, Frank Scanlon, Tim Jagisch, and Jiro Baskin), New York, NY

64.8265: Michael Sullivan, William Massie Studio, Bloomfield Hills, MI

The urbanSHED competition is seeking a fresh, new sidewalk shed design that’s sustainable, economical, meets or exceeds current safety requirements and City regulations, improves technical and structural performance – and creates a better environment for the people who live in, work in and visit New York City.
