2007 AIA San Francisco Design Awards Winners Announced

San Francisco, CA (April 23, 2007) – The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter (AIA San Francisco) announces the winners of the 2007 AIA San Francisco Design Awards program. The winners were revealed and celebrated last night at a special gala held at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in the Merchant’s Exchange Building. The emcees were Marshall Purnell, 2008 President-elect of the AIA, and William Menking, Founder and Editor of The Architects Newspaper and Architecture, Urbanism and City Planning Professor at Pratt Institute.
At the gala, an unprecedented number of winners—52 in all—were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the built environment in the categories of Excellence in Architecture and Interior Architecture, Energy + Sustainability, Integrated Practice, Young Architects and Associates, Unbuilt Design, and Urban Design in the Bay Area. Each of these award categories was divided into four subcategories—Honor, Merit, Citation and Special Commendation. In addition, awards for Special Achievement were also presented.
Each of the winning projects will be featured in the May issues of California Home + Design magazine and The Architects Newspaper California edition.

WINNERS
Winners of the Excellence in Architecture Award in the Honor category are Fougeron Architecture for 1532 House; HGA Architects & Engineers Will Bruder + Partners for the Hercules Public Library; Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects in association with Paulett Taggart Architects for Plaza Apartments; Perkins + Will for the Richard M. Lucas Center; and Stanley Saitowitz / Natoma Architects, Inc. for 1028 Natoma. Anne Phillips Architecture for Breland Senior Homes; Bohlin Cywinski Jackson for Apple Store Fifth Avenue; Paulett Taggart Architects for La Cocina and Folsom Street Housing are the Merit winners in this category. The Citation winners include: Aidlin Darling Design for the Sonoma Barn; David Baker + Partners, Architects in association with Gelfand Partners Architects for the Curran House Apartments; Marcy Wong & Donn Logan Architects for the Eastern Sierra Inter-Agency Visitor Center; Michael Willis Architects for the Joseph Jenson Filtration Plant Oxidation Retrofit Program; Paulett Taggart Architects for the North Beach Pool and Clubhouse; and Sasaki Associates, Inc. for the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall, Utah State University.
Winners in the Energy + Sustainability Honor category are as follows: Daniel Smith & Associates for the Presentation Welcoming Center and Dining Hall; EHDD Architecture for the Chartwell School; Feldman Architecture for House Ocho; HOK for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Forensic Laboratory. HOK is also a Merit winner for Franchise Tax Board along with WRNS Studio, LLP for the 501 Second Street Office.
A new category this year, Integrated Practice, has three winners. The Honor winner goes to Hawley Peterson & Snyder Architects with DPR construction, Inc. for the Camino Medical Group Mountain View Campus. The Citation winner is Mueller Nicholls, Inc. for the Piano Studio. And the Special Commendation winner is Chong Partners Architecture, Renzo Piano Workshop + Webcor Builders for the California Academy of Sciences.
Winner of the Excellence in Interior Architecture Award in the Honor category is VeeV Design for a Cut + Fold interior. The Merit winners are EHDD Architecture for the Merrill-Cazier Library, Utah State University and William Duff, Architects for the Timbuk2 Concept Store. The Citation winners for this category are: CCS Architecture for the Lettus Café Organic; Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects for The Bay School of San Francisco; Melander Architects, Inc. for the California Academy of Sciences Transition Facility; Ogrydziak / Prillinger Architects for the Concrete House; Stoner Meek Architecture & Urban Design for the East Oakland School of the Arts; and Turnbull Griffin Haesloop for the Sausalito Renovation.
Winners of the Unbuilt Design Award in the Honor category are Anderson Anderson Architecture for the CamelBackShotGunSpongeGarden and Kuth / Ranieri Architects, LLP for the Environmental Magnet School. The Merit winners are: Ian Birchall + Associates for 178 Townsend Street and Stanley Saitowitz / Natoma Architects, Inc. for Octavia Gateway. The Citation winners include VeeV Design for Beyond Quantities (National AIDS Memorial); IwamotoScott Architecture with proces2 for the Jellyfish House; and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP for the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The student citation winner for Unbuilt Design is Young Jin Yoo for the New Daly City, Transit Oriented Village.
Winner of the Urban Design Award in the Honor category goes to Heidi Sokolowsky & Sabine Engelhardt for the “Zipper” Development Concept. The Citation winner is Sasaki Associates, Inc. for the Wilmington Waterfront Development. A Special Commendation Award in this category goes to Van Meter Williams Pollack, LLP for the Valencia Gardens / Hope VI Redevelopment.
Alexander J.C. Tsai, Assoc. AIA and Raphael Sperry, AIA are the two winners in the Young Architect Award category.
Recipients of the Special Achievement Award include: Chris & Michele Meany winners of the Client Award for the refurbishing of the Ferry Building; San Francisco Department of the Environment, Dean Macris, Director of Planning, San Francisco; Jim Chappell, Assoc. AIA, SPUR; the LINE Editorial Board; and finally, Renewing the AIA San Francisco Office, team led by Quezada Architecture.
