Detail of the competition-winning proposal CLIP UP by Enrico Pintabona, Irene Sapienza, and Gabriele Motta

The winners of the tur(i)ntogreen international design competition were recently announced in Turin, Italy. Organized by the Research and Documentation Center in Technology, Architecture and City in Developing Countries at the Politecnico di Torino, the competition had invited university students from around the world to develop new multidisciplinary solutions for a sustainable and inclusive city reflecting on new forms of urban management and regeneration through agro - housing and urban - farming models.

The call received submissions from 308 students organized in 109 groups with 46 universities involved from over 24 countries. tur(i)ntogreen was sponsored the UN-HABITAT within the "I'm a City Changer" campaign.

1st Place: CLIP UP
Enrico Pintabona, Irene Sapienza, Gabriele Motta
Università La Sapienza di Roma, Italy

From the jury report: "The proposed project provides a sustainable, wide and well integrated program that considers social engagement, urban agriculture, passive architecture and low carbon solutions. The design features and elements perfectly support the idea of integration of built and natural environment; nevertheless the architectural language clearly refers to the recent past and the identity of the competition area. Architecture and program outline a possible and desirable future vision for Mirafiori."

2nd Place: FROM EARTH TO EARTH
Stefano Scavino, Marilia Ferreira Alves, Erika Kawas Nunes, Stefania Manzo
Politecnico di Torino, Italy

From the jury report: "The project aims and achieves a design for a community rather than just a physical neighbourhood; the simple formal features are the result of a functional – engaging process among the young potential user’s needs and aspirations with existing context. The proposal spots resources in the actual context, identifying ways to start innovative smart urban processes in alternative to the present situation. This solution entails a new paradigm in the urban culture."

2nd Place: Agata Lisowska, Paulina Kuszneruk, Marta Kaplan
Technical University of Bialystok, Poland

From the jury report: "The strength of a utopian urban vision brings to the evidence the contradictions of the contemporary model, proposes a serious reflection on the neighbourhood conditions and reveals possible directions for the definition of a new way to live. The proposed idea of a low cost agro-urban environment based on the concepts of “degrowth” and “transition towns” perfectly matches with the competition aims and the urban global challenges at large."
