2014 eVolo Skyscraper Competition Winners

First Place. Vernacular Versatility. Yong Ju Lee (United States)

The winners for the 9th annual eVolo Skyscraper Competition have finally been revealed! The sky is indeed the limit for the popular worldwide competition, which gave participants complete freedom with their skyscraper designs. Imaginative ideas aside, entrants also had to examine the skyscraper's definition, purpose, and potential in the 21st century.

Out of 525 entries from 43 countries in all continents, the Jury awarded three winners:

  • 1st place: "Vernacular Versatility" by Yong Ju Lee - U.S.
  • 2nd place: "Car and Shell: or Marinetti’s Monster" by Mark Talbot and Daniel Markiewicz - U.S.
  • 3rd place: "Propagate Skyscraper" by YuHao Liu and Rui Wu - Canada

Twenty honorable mentions were also selected.

"Second place was awarded to Mark Talbot and Daniel Markiewicz from the United States for his project 'Car and Shell: or Marinetti’s Monster' which proposes a city in the sky for Detroit, MI."

Third Place: Propagate Skyscraper: Carbon Dioxide Structure by YuHao Liu, Rui Wu (Canada)

"The recipients of the third place are YuHao Liu and Rui Wu from Canada for their project “Propagate Skyscraper” that investigates the structural use of carbon dioxide in skyscrapers."

"Some of the honorable mentions include a skyscraper that filters the air of polluted cities, a sky village for Los Angeles, a 3D printed tower in the desert, and a vertical transportation hub among other innovative projects."

To commemorate the 9th Annual Skyscraper Competition, eVolo will also publish the Limited Edition eVolo Skyscrapers 2 book as a follow-up to their popular eVolo Skyscrapers book. The 628-page book examines 150 projects received during recent years of the competition. Only 1000 copies are available worldwide.
