Mark your calendars! Some popular architects will be speaking in the upcoming "Innovators" talk series at the Museum of the City of New York, starting tomorrow May 6 at 6:30 p.m.
If you already checked out the current Palaces for the People exhibition, you're one step ahead. Each talk will explore the influence of the Guastavino Company, led by a Catalan father-son team whose architecture, construction, and design practices helped shape NYC's built landscape.
Scroll further down for more details.
The series kicks off on Tuesday, May 6 with Innovators: Building Design and Construction, featuring Guy Nordensen (Guy Nordenson Associates), Valentine Lehr (Lehr Consultants International), Jill Lerner and Marianne Kwok (Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates), and Corie Sharples (Shop Architects). The talk will focus on the changing landscape of architecture and engineering, and how the Guastavinos of today are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in New York City’s built environment—from 3D printing to prefabrication to modular design.
May 14 - Innovators with Norman Foster: From Guastavino to the Moon: Lord Norman Foster and his engineering partner Roger Ridsdill Smith will discuss how the engineering marvels of Rafael Guastavino Sr. and Jr. paved the way for buildings, bridges, flying machines, and inventions of all kinds.
July 7 - Innovators: The Uses of Tiles Today: Suzanne Stephens, writer, critic, and deputy editor of Architectural Record, will moderate a conversation about the latest innovations in the use, design, and manufacture of ceramics and tiles. Panelists include Daniel Libeskind (Studio Daniel Libeskind), Ingeborg Rocker (Harvard University GSD, Rocker-Lange Architects), and Matthew Karlin (third-generation president of the Nemo Tile Company).
