2008 AIA San Francisco Design Awards Winners Announced

San Francisco, CA (April 18, 2008) – The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter (AIA San Francisco) announces the winners of the 2008 AIA San Francisco Design Awards program. The winners were revealed and celebrated last night at a special gala held at the Terra Gallery in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood. The emcees for the evening were Tom Hartle, Publisher, California Home + Design and Jennifer Devlin, AIA San Francisco Board President.
At the gala, winners were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the built environment in the categories of Excellence in Architecture and Interior Architecture, Energy + Sustainability, Integrated Project Delivery, Young Architects and Associates, Unbuilt Design, and Urban Design in the Bay Area. Each of these award categories was divided into four subcategories—Honor, Merit, Citation and Special Commendation. In addition, awards for Special Achievement were also presented.
Each of the winning projects is featured in the May issue of California Home + Design magazine.

WINNERS
Winners of the Excellence in Architecture Award in the Honor category are Morphosis in association with SmithGroup for San Francisco Federal Building; Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects for Bridge Residence; Fougeron Architecture for Tehama Grasshopper and Brand + Allen Architects for 185 Post Street. Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects for 1234 Howard Street; Mark Cavagnero Associates’ for the Clovis Memorial District Conference Center; Jensen Architects for Ann Hamilton Tower; Jensen Architects for CCA Graduate Center and Lorcan O’Herlihy for the Sherman Residence are the Merit winners in this category. The Citation winners include: Studio Architecture for the Department of Health Services Richmond Campus Office Building; Nick Noyes Architecture for the Healdsburg Residence and David Baker + Partners Architects for Blue Star Corner.
Winners in the Energy + Sustainability Honor category are Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects for the Nueva School Hillside Learning Complex and Siegel & Strain Architects for Orinda City Hall. SmithGroup is the Merit winner for the Molecular Foundry. The Citation award went to Huntsman Architectural Group for the design of the offices of Beverly Prior Architects.
The Integrated Project Delivery category has two winners this year. The Honor award goes to The Design Partnership for the UCSF Health Sciences West Fourth Floor Pathology Laboratory. HOK received the Special Commendation award for the Sutter Health Prototype Hospital.
Winners of the Excellence in Interior Architecture Award in the Honor category include Herman & Coliver Architecture in association with Locus Architecture for the Congregation B’Nai Israel Sanctuary Renovation; Sand Studios for the Marvisi Residence and Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects for Conduit. The Merit winners are Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects for the Mizu Spa and Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects for the Optical Centre. The Citation winners for this category are: Plum Architects for the Forestville School Library; Montalba Architects for Kara’s Cupcakes Ghirardelli Square; Montalba Architects for the I Dream of Cake Gallery and Pollack Architecture for the Vans World Headquarters.
The winner of the Unbuilt Design Award in the Honor category is IwamotoScott Architecture for the Hydro-Net. The Merit winner is also IwamotoScott Architecture for REEF. The Citation winners include Kennerly Architecture & Planning for 1225 Dolores Street; Public Architecture for the Day Labor Station and Field Architecture for Bodega Baur Vineyard Estate and Winery.
Winner of the Urban Design Award in the Honor category goes to CMG Landscape Architecture for the Panhandle Bandshell. The Merit winners are Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for Beijing Finance Street and RossDrulisCusenbery Architecture for San Ysidro Border Station.
Jason Dale Pierce, Assoc. AIA, and Rachel Bannon-Godfrey are this year’s recipients of the Young Architects Award.
Those honored with a Special Achievement Award include: Tim Culvahouse, FAIA, for his strong leadership and vision as editor of arcCA, the quarterly architecture journal of AIA California Council; The Board of Trustees of the California Academy of Sciences for their involvement and foresight in constructing the new LEED Platinum building opening this Fall and Public Architecture for their dedication to the One Percent Solution, a program which now has 300 firms signed on to offer their design services pro bono to nonprofits.
