Now in its sixth year, the International Highrise Award 2014 went to Bosco Verticale in Milan, Italy by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri Architetti and Barreca & La Varra) with developer Hines Italia SGR. The biennial award recognizes high-rise towers around the world that are considered to best combine exterior + interior, sustainable, and social aspects. Buildings had to be at least 100 meters tall and commissioned within the last two years.
Starting from a large competition pool of 800 highrises, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) nominated 26 buildings from 17 countries then shortlisted five finalists. In addition to winning €50,000, the Boeri Studio received the prize statuette during a recent awards ceremony in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche.
The four shortlisted finalists, who were also recognized at the ceremony, included:
- “De Rotterdam” in Rotterdam, Netherlands (151.3 meters) by Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam
- “One Central Park” in Sydney, Australia (64.5 and 116 meters) by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Paris
- “Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel” in Barcelona, Spain (105 meters) by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Paris
- Sliced Porosity Block in Chengdu, China (123 meters) by Steven Holl Architects, New York
