KPMB Architects + West 8 + Greenberg to design Waterfront Toronto ferry terminal + park

KPMB Architects + West 8 + Greenberg Consultants

The KPMB Architects + West 8 + Greenberg Consultants team scored the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and Harbour Square Park in Waterfront Toronto's Innovative Design Competition. A few weeks ago, five finalist teams were in the running for the major urban development. Teams included at least one locally based firm and familiar names like Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Stoss Landscape Urbanism, nARCHITECTS, and Clement Blanchet Architecture, to name a few.

KPMB (Toronto), West 8 (Rotterdam), and Greenberg Consultants (Toronto) won the invited competition with their proposal, "Harbour Landing". But as with all big projects comes big risks. According to The Globe and Mail, the money is secured for Phase One, which is slated to begin in 2016. And if all goes well, the plan will be carried out in increments as more money becomes available.

"Harbour Landing" will integrate the operations of a ferry terminal and a public square park into one multi-functional structure. According to West 8 landscape architect Jerry Therry, "Harbour Landing" intends to allow the existing terminal to stay in place as the new one gets constructed.
