Winners of the 2016 Faith & Form Religious Art & Architecture Awards

Whether you frequently visit a religious space or not, there are plenty of projects out there that are worthy of praise in their own right, as seen in the 2016 Faith & Form/IFRAA Awards Program. Founded in 1978 and co-sponsored by Faith & Form Magazine and the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture (IFRAA), the annual competition scopes out the best in religious architecture, liturgical design, and art for religious spaces.

Open to all from architects to students to clergy, the competition concluded with 28 winning projects in categories including New Facilities, Restoration, Liturgical/Interior Design, Sacred Landscape, Ceremonial Objects, Student Work, and more.

In an overview of the 2016 competition, Faith & Form editor Michael J. Crosbie wrote: “Of the winning projects nearly half were designed or created for sites outside of North America. The jury for the awards observed that many of the winners used natural light in creative ways, making it part of the religious environment. While natural light has long been a way of conveying a sense of immanence in religious art and architecture, the jury noted that it also contributes to sustainability and helps to reduce energy costs. Several jurors were impressed with how designers used an economy of means with simple, elegant materials to meet the needs of congregations. A reverence for natural materials was seen in many submissions, and in winning projects.”
