24H Competition “Mythology” winners envision a temple for the Gods of Olympus

By Justine Testado|

Thursday, Apr 13, 2017

The mythical gods of Olympus were the muses of inspiration in Ideas Forward's 15th edition of the 24H Competition. Like in every installment, once the prompt is revealed, participants race against the clock to complete and submit their proposals all within 24 hours.

For the Mythology-themed edition, participants worldwide had to design a temple on Mount Olympus that is inspired by the personal traits and abilities of the 12 Gods of Olympus. The only program requirements were a Great Hall for the Council of the Gods as well as one room dedicated to each of the 12 deities. Entrants had the option to add other elements into their proposal.

At the end of the competition, the jury picked the three prize winners and seven honorable mentions. Have a look at the entries and some jury comments below.

1st place - Team: Abhijeet Karwa, Stuti Murarka, Unnati Khanna, Sreemoyee Ray, Trisha Dasgupta; City: Mumbai; Country: India.

Jury comments:

“The proposal reinterpret the search for divinity into a quest – a game designed by the Gods themselves to challenge us. And to make sure only the few and the worthy gain access to the mighty Council of the Gods. The graphics are intricate, while self-explanatory, and shows great creativity in interpreting the 12 Gods of Olympus into architectonic space.” — Arne Reisegg

“The sequential scenario defining the series of challenges and the relation between mythology and gaming was considered significant about the proposeddesign. The architectural language was considered inspiring due to the level differences on Mount Olympus. The proposed path and its continuity within thecontext is quite impressive.” — Ziya Imren

“Interesting the idea of creating a path throughout the mountain where you ́ll be able to achieve divinity. It might be a game! Or not! The track and the spaces, created along the journey are disposed in a way that enriches the discovering ofthe mountain while crossing temples. You can feel the power of the gods.” — José Martinez

2nd Place - Team: Andrei Theodor; City: Bucharest; Country: Romania.

Jury comments:

“The abstract representation of each deity has a compositional finesse. The idea of representing the gods in a vertical manner is also a nice touch, which verysubtly refers to our current society.” — Ygit Acar

“The tower is a strong symbol for the journey towards the Gods, and the text explains the ascend in a poetic manor. The fact that the tower is firmly grounded on earth and ends in thin air is a great image for the distance that remains between Man and God, even after having scaled the house of the sleeping deities.” — Arne Reisegg

“The proposal assumes the god ́s house as a tower, a sculpture landed on the mountain. In silence we can feel the power of the gods. Climbing the structure wecan feel the presence of the different gods when we cross each floor until we reach the end of the journey - ZEUS.” — José Martinez

3rd Place - Team: Tobias Bor, Christian Slama; City: Kassel; Country: Germany.

Jury comments:

“Amazing the idea of having a walking route with several modules, all with the same size, though establishing each gods house with different drawings, distinct sets, synthesizing each god's own symbolism / image. Astonishing presentation with a minimalistic illustration and a powerful strong image.” — José Martinez

“The design treatment of the replacing gods temples into human scaled spaces with their scenarios was considered sensible. Re-arranging the spaces within this idea and overall naive representation was totally differed from other proposals. Series of experiences have been designed for people, by creating frame of visions, atmospheres, light and shadow elements within spatial aspects.” — Ziya Imren

“Interesting work: the transformation of a simple box shape into different spaces for different gods. Hiking Mount Olympus!” — Francisco Freitas

Jury members: Arne Reisegg, Ziya Imren, Francisco Freitas, Jose Martinez, Ygit Acar
