This week's picks for NYC architecture and design events

It's summertime in the city — a good time for cooling off while browsing an exhibition or enjoying warm summer evenings at a local block party. New York City is abuzz with folks expanding the possibilities of how architectural design and practice can be reinterpreted, bringing attention to what in the urban environment is constantly overlooked. 5x5: Participatory Provocations | July 11-Sept 9

Currently at the Center for Architecture, this touring exhibition rounds up 25 young architects who “engage controversial issues in an imagined future, producing physical expressions or provocations“. Each team of designers responds to one of five prompts, which include contemplating luxury tourism on the moon to the potential construction of a certain anti-immigration wall at the U.S.-Mexico border. 

UPTOWN BOUNCE 2017 | July 19-August 9

The Museum of the City of New York and El Museo del Barrio have teamed up once again to bring about the Fourth Annual Uptown Bounce, a joint series of summer block parties. New Yorkers can gather to enjoy musical performances, leading NYC DJs, gallery talks, art-making workshops, and of course, dancing lessons for all ages and skill levels.

This Future Has a Past | July 25-Sept 12

This multimedia installation reflects on the life of Gregory Ain and his 1950 Exhibition House for the MoMA garden, the architect’s last significant building. Originally organized for an exhibition at the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture, “This Future Has a Past” retraces the mysterious fate of the house and unearths an extraordinary moment in Ain’s personal history.

Doug Wheeler: PSAD Synthetic Desert III | Closing on August 2

It's the final days of Doug Wheeler's PSAD Synthetic Desert III installation at the Guggenheim. Inspired by his own perceptions of the northern Arizona desert, Wheeler transformed one of the museum's galleries into a “semi-anechoic chamber” designed to minimize noise and induce a sensate impression of infinite space.
