By Bustler Editors|

Monday, Feb 12, 2018

Wondering what architecture and design events are happening around New York City this week? Housing takes the spotlight in Bustler's latest event picks: The Architectural League's last Housing Brass Tacks discussion; a book talk with Princeton University history professor Alison Isenberg about the future of urban development, specifically in Manhattan and San Francisco; and a new exhibition about social housing projects and strategies in Europe. Read on for our latest weekly event recommendations.

Housing Brass Tacks: What Can Architects Do? | February 12

The Architectural League's final Housing Brass Tacks session will debate the possibilities and limitations of the architectural profession to address access, affordability, and inequity in housing. Panelists include Susanne Schindler, Deborah Gans, and Jared Della Valle. The audience can join in on the discussion afterward.

Alison Isenberg Book Talk - “Designing San Francisco Art, Land, and Urban Renewal in the City by the Bay” | February 13

Join Alison Isenberg, who will discuss a new paradigm for understanding past and present struggles to define an urban future, and compares and contrasts the well-known example of midcentury Manhattan (think Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs) with equally contentious San Francisco.

Social Housing: New European Projects | Opening on February 15

Based on a 2017 publication of the same name, this exhibition showcases 25 European case studies of social housing by 20 practices, presenting a range of building and dwelling typologies, emerging design approaches, and refurbishment strategies. Together, they offer a challenge to housing professionals and citizens in the US to rethink how we build and highlights the vital role of accessible, low-cost housing.
