Located in downtown Toledo, Ohio, the new ProMedica Corporate Headquarters was one of 12 national-winning projects of the 2018 Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2) awards program. Established by the American Institute of Steel Construction over 50 years ago, the prestigious awards are bestowed to building projects for outstanding structural engineering design.
Additionally, the ProMedica building — which comprises the adaptive reuse of two existing buildings — was also honored with the Presidential Award of Excellence for Adaptive Reuse. Members of the winning project team will be presented with their awards during a ceremony on June 25.
HKS, Inc.'s Chicago and Dallas offices worked as the architect and structural engineer of the project, respectively. Using structural steel, the new ProMedica headquarters is the adaptive reuse of a 19th-century Daniel Burnham-designed steam plant and a brutalist bank building.
“This project is such a feel-good story, taking familiar existing buildings and giving them new life,” said AISC President Charlie Carter in a statement. “It’s a double victory for sustainable design. Not only did the designers re-use what already exists, they adapted it all to serve the new program with structural steel, the most sustainable material you can choose.”
