Shortlisted projects unveiled for 2019 Dulwich Pavilion

Dulwich Picture Gallery and the London Festival of Architecture have unveiled the six shortlisted projects for the 2019 Dulwich Pavilion, to be built next summer within the historic grounds of the Sir John Soane-designed South London art gallery. The initiative—which follows the success of the gallery's first pavilion in 2017 by IF_DO—asked entrants to design a ’temporary welcome space’ featuring a café or bar that will hold public events and summer programming. Out of 150 submissions, the six selected schemes come from Caswell Bank Architects, PUP Architects, e10 studio, Flea Folly Architects, Pricegore with designer Yinka Ilori, and Projects Office.

Unlike London's other major temporary summer structure the Serpentine Pavilion, which gives big international names their first chance to build in Britain, this South London rival offers up its yard to emerging, typically local, practices and practitioners. Only two years in, its budget is smaller and its profile, lower than the Serpentine's long-running scheme, but the projects proposed show off the impressive charms of London's rising stars.

It also allows the public to get involved. Jennifer Scott, The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, said: "As the world’s first gallery that was built specifically to bring art to the public, it is hugely important to us that our visitors have a say in our 2019 Pavilion." Models will be on display at Dulwich Picture Gallery during the London Festival of Architecture from June through July 2018, when the public will have the chance to vote for their favorite design. The winning proposal, based on public vote combined with a panel vote, will be revealed in July.
