Denise Scott Brown wins 2018 Soane Medal

The pioneering Denise Scott Brown has been announced as the recipient of the 2018 Soane Medal and Soane Annual Lecturer. Awarded  by Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, the yearly medal recognizes influential architects that have significantly contributed to the field through their built work, education, history, and theory. Last year, Rafael Moneo received the inaugural medal and was the first to present the Soane Annual Lecture.

Denise Scott Brown is being honored with the medal for her “ideas and work as architect, planner, urbanist, theorist, writer and educator have had a global influence, transforming thinking about architecture and cities”. She will be recognized during an evening event at London's National Gallery on October 17, which will include a presentation of her hour-long lecture that was pre-recorded in her home in Philadelphia, accompanied by rarely seen photographs.

After the lecture, architect David Chipperfield — a Soane Medal juror and Soane Museum trustee — will give a response and have a short discussion with journalist Tom Weaver. Tickets to the event can be purchased here.

“The jury considered many outstanding candidates; however Denise Scott Brown stood apart and was the jury’s unanimous choice. Scott Brown’s contribution across architecture, urbanism, theory and education over the last fifty years has been profound and far-reaching. Her example has been an inspiration to many, and we are delighted to honor her with the awarding of the Soane Medal," David Chipperfield said.

In recent years, Denise Scott Brown won the 2017 Jane Drew Prize and the 2016 AIA Gold Medal with Robert Venturi. Bustler's sister site Archinect also previously conducted a three-part interview with Scott Brown in 2016. You can check out the first installment here.
