Starting with 975 submissions across 14 categories, the Australian Institute of Architects' 2018 National Australian Architecture Awards competition pool has been narrowed down to a shortlist of 70 stunning projects, most of which are located across the continent.

The jury — which includes immediate past AIA president Richard Kirk (chair), Jill Garner, Katelin Butler, Charles Wright and Kevin O’Brien — was impressed by the sustainability initiatives and a “growing sophistication and confident inventiveness” in the projects. The jurors also noted the public architecture and multi-residential categories having “formidable projects” that range in scale, function, and complexity. “This national overview provided an opportunity to reflect on how Australia’s vastly different landscapes, urban conditions and economic circumstances influence the work we saw,” Kirk said in a statement.

The public will get the chance to vote for the People's Choice Award from this year's shortlist starting October 1, and the winners will be announced during the National Architecture Awards ceremony in Melbourne on November 1.
