Final submissions for Infrastructures: The 2018 James Harrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture

The JamesHarrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture is open to anyone, anywhere in the world, who has received an accredited degree in architecture within the last eight years. The $50,000 fellowship is granted biannually to support 6-12 months of international travel for architectural research. This year's theme is Infrastructures, developed by jury chair AndreaLeers, Principal and Co-Founder, Leers Weinzapfel Associates. The fellowship is jointly administered by the SamFox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis and AIA St. Louis.

2018 Theme: Infrastructures

Our urban environment is shaped not only by its buildings and public spaces, but also by its infrastructure—the fundamental systems, facilities, and services that enable, sustain, and enhance societal living conditions. Infrastructure may be large public services elements such as power plants, roads, and bridges. It may also be small domestic systems or technological components enabling different kinds of human interaction or environmental impact. Or it may be blue-green infrastructure networks of natural ecosystems for water management and long-term sustainability and resilience. At all scales and manifestations, infrastructural elements are increasingly important subjects of design investigation. No longer thrust to the margins of cities, campuses, and communities, they have emerged as important actors in the design of our individual and collective environments.

The Steedman 2018 jury seeks creative research proposals on the design impact and potential for infrastructures to positively contribute to a sustainable urban future.

A Glimpse at 2016 Steedman Fellow Pedro Pitarch's Work

Pedro Pitarch, an architect and composer based in Madrid, won the 2016 Steedman Fellowship for his proposal, Disguised Metropolitanisms: Unveiling the Masquerade of Urban Domesticity, which explored the blurring of boundaries between public and private spheres. Pedro's research took him to cities across Europe, Asia and the United States as he developed six typologies of urban domesticity.
