Everything you need to know about Archinect's Generative Futures AI Storytelling Challenge (but never dared to ask)

Following the launch of Archinect's Generative Futures: An AI + Architecture Storytelling Challenge, we are very happy to see the first wave of submissions roll in well ahead of the June 12 deadline next week. The competition invites architects, designers, students, and storytellers to imagine the future of architecture and the built environment through the lens of artificial intelligence.

What do submissions need to include?

The brief invites story submissions comprised of text and images responding to one of the following four themes: the AI-infused city, the AI-infused architecture studio, the AI-infused construction site, or define your own theme in our Open Category as your story relates to AI and architecture.

Can AI be used to generate story elements?

Yes, your submission is absolutely permitted to make use of AI-driven text-to-image tools for graphics, and text generation tools for words and scripts. Please include a list of credits at the end of your submission text specifying what, if any, AI and software tools were used in the production of the submission.

Is there a word limit for the story text?

Yes, the story text should not exceed 1,000 words.

And how many images need to be included?

Each submission can include up to 5 images. You can easily upload JPG, PNG, or GIF files through the submission form. Images must be formatted in RGB colors (not CMYK) in a high web resolution. The maximum size per file is 2 megabytes.

Are animated GIFs or video animations accepted?

Sure, you can upload GIF files via the submission form, along with your text. If videos support your story submission, feel free to include a link to your video(s) hosted online in the submission form's text field. Please make sure that the linked video files are viewable online, as we are not able to download all of them.

Is it necessary to submit images AND text, or is it possible to submit only images OR text?

Yes, that is possible. Keep in mind, however, that our jury panel's judging criteria are based on 50% creativity & originality and 50% impact & relevance. So don't hold back, and tell your strongest story by all means available.

Our stellar panel of judges includes leading figures from the world of architecture, design, entertainment, and art, including Refik Anadol (Media Artist, Director & Educator), Michael Begler (TV & Film Screenwriter, Producer & Showrunner), Kordae Henry (Filmmaker, Visual Artist & Educator), Sandra Manninger (Architect, Researcher & Educator), Laure Michelon (Architectural Technologist, Designer & Educator), and René Peralta (Architect, Author & Educator).

Is there a submission fee?

There is a small $10 (USD) entry fee.

Can I win any cool prizes?

Well, of course! In addition to a $500 cash prize and publication on Archinect, Bustler, and MIT Technology Review, the best submissions selected by the jury will win software from our prize sponsors Morpholio Trace and SketchArch.

Do I need an Archinect account to submit my entry?

Yes, you must be logged in to Bustler, using your Bustler or Archinect account credentials, in order to access the submission form. New users can quickly register a free account.

Can I submit edits or corrections before the deadline?

If you already submitted your entry, you can send an email to [email protected], and we can make that correction for you.

When is the submission deadline?

Entries will be accepted until Monday, June 12th, 2023, 6:00 PM Pacific Time.

When and where will the winners be announced?
