Henning Larsen has been announced as the winner of a draft design competition to transform Prague Central Station into a modern rail hub for the capital region named Nový Hlavák.

The project will increase passenger capacity for an existing Hlavni Nadrazi terminal and train hall while enhancing a connection to Vrchlického Sady Park, forming an optimized destination at the heart that’s based around principles of micro-mobility and pedestrianism.

Greta Tiedje, the Associate Design Director for Henning Larsen, explains: “More than a transit hub, Nový hlavák is conceived as an extended living room — a vibrant space within a green park adorned with a timber roof. It's not merely a place to pass through; it's a destination, a meeting point for individuals and communities. We envision Nový hlavák as a place where people gather, linger, and make meaningful connections — a truly inclusive and inviting urban oasis within the heart of Prague.”

The firm will work with Ramboll to deliver the 263,000-square-foot plan in advance of an expected 200% increase in the number of daily travelers. Space for a new tram line is enacted by lifting a GLT roof 45 feet above the existing historic Fantova Building and removing its steel girder and parking deck. A new pavilion is created outside to serve as a gateway and connector to the park, which has been restructured into two zones and a new public plaza. An ETFE-clad open-roof timber canopy connects the design, which also offers on-site stormwater management and the ability to mitigate against urban heat island effects.

The firm's Global Market Director, Jacob Kurek, says: “Our commitment goes beyond creating a structure for transportation; it's about enhancing daily experiences. Nový hlavák is meticulously designed for super-efficient functionality, ensuring seamless mobility for everyone. The station aims to redefine the very idea of what a daily commute can be, making it not just a journey but an experience that adds value to people's lives.”

Henning Larsen will build on its ongoing experience designing the new Vinge Train Station in Frederikssund, Denmark, which is expected for 2033.

The project will be delivered on a yet-to-be-determined timeline. A cost estimate for Nový Hlavák’s construction was also unavailable at press time.
