Philippe Starck joins The Architect's Chair competition as part of its superstar jury panel

Buildner proudly announces the return of The Architect's Chair Edition #2, a competition that challenges the very notion of design by translating architectural concepts into a singular, symbolic form—the chair. This contest not only celebrates the creativity and innovation of architects and designers worldwide but also offers a unique opportunity to reflect their architectural vision and style through the medium of furniture design.

Jury Panel Introduction

This year’s competition features an impressive jury panel, led by the iconic Philippe Starck of STARCK, a master of infusing functionality with avant-garde design across multiple disciplines. Each member of the jury brings a unique perspective that enriches the evaluation process:

- Boris Berlin of Boris Berlin Design, whose design philosophy pushes the boundaries of materials and technology.

- Anne Brandhøj from Bly Studio, known for transforming raw materials into artful furniture.

- Sarah Hossli, a product designer from Switzerland with a passion for creating designs that resonate culturally and socially.

- Flora Lee of MAD Architects, who incorporates narrative and emotion into architectural projects.

- Alexander Lervik, a champion of Scandinavian design, explores the intersection of functionality and innovation.

- Lorenz Noelle, whose minimalist design approach focuses on the purity of form and function.

- Natalia Sanz Laviña of YSLA YamamuraSanzLaviña Architects, whose architectural works are a testament to cultural synthesis and innovation.

- Harrison Stallan of OMA, an expert in integrating architectural concepts into functional design objects.

- Takeshi Yamamura, also of YSLA, who brings a scholarly approach to architectural and design challenges.

The Competition: A Convergence of Architecture and Furniture Design

The Architect's Chair Edition #2 invites architects and designers to conceive a chair that does more than offer a place to sit—it must embody an architectural ideology or personal design philosophy. This competition is an exploration of how architectural concepts and methodologies can be interpreted and expressed in furniture design. It challenges participants to think beyond traditional boundaries and consider the chair not just as a piece of furniture, but as a spatial proposition and a piece of art.

Participants are encouraged to use innovative materials, embrace new technologies, and experiment with form and function. The chair, as a symbol of design thinking and personal expression, should communicate the designer’s architectural vision and how these ideas can scale down from large structures to intimate, everyday objects.

Key Dates:

- Registration Deadline: June 19, 2024

- Submission Deadline: July 22, 2024, 11:59 PM London Time

- Announcement of Winners: September 6, 2024

We invite all creative minds—from seasoned architects to emerging designers—to participate in this extraordinary competition. Whether you are looking to push the envelope in design or express your unique architectural perspective, The Architect's Chair Edition #2 provides the perfect platform. Register now and contribute to a global dialogue on the future of design. Visit the competition website for more information and to register.
