When the Lenox Avenue Bridge opened in 1905, early 20th-century planners foresaw 145th Street as “one of the important business streets of upper Manhattan.” The Bronx connection also redoubled the crosstown thoroughfare’s identity as a hub of public transit, a destination of sports and social life, and a benchmark of Harlem’s expansion as the capital of Black America.
