AS.Architecture-Studio is holding an architectural competition which will highlight the dynamic young African architecture.
The winning projects of this international competition open to young African architects will be exhibited in 2014 at the CA’ASI during the International Architecture Biennale, June 7 - Nov 23, 2014. This competition is a unique opportunity to underline the important role played by the African World today, as seen throughout it’s contemporary architecture.
For the 14th International Architecture Biennale, the CA’ASI will open the doors of Palazzo Santa Maria Nova to emerging African architects in order to emphasize the creativity and originality of new African architecture, and to help it gain world-wide recognition.
All documents must be submitted by March 15th, 2014 latest. An international jury will meet in Paris at the end of March, to select the winners and running projects. The awards ceremony will be held in Venice. The winners will then be invited to present their project at the CA’ASI in Venice, during the 14th International Architecture Biennale, as an exhibition is specially ongoing for the occasion.
Application conditions:
Have a maximum experience of 15 years as an architect and be a Citizen of an African country outside the Arab League (a prior competition was held in 2012).
Present a project, realized or not, located in one of the following countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tomé and Principe, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinnea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo.
A diploma in Architecture, Engineering, or a Fine Arts school diploma is compulsory.
The age limit is set at 45 years old.
Applicants may participate to the competition as individuals, as a group, or in collaboration with a practice (proven that you are contractually committed to the practice’s project).
Applicants may submit up to three projects, but all three must have a different subject.
The applicants must prepare a folder written in French or in English. It must include:
- a duly completed registration sheet (downloaded from www.ca-asi.com website)
- a C.V.
- a cover letter, 2 pages maximum
- a project presentation consisting of a maximum of 10 pages - one hard copy on A4 format and a soft copy in PDF format. All images will be in TIFF or JPG format, with a minimum resolution of 300 DPI. The jury’s decision will be based on the images that will be projected to them, in addition to the hard copy.

Other exhibitions are planned following the Venice Biennale, in Bordeaux, Paris, and other cultural institutions in Africa. A bilingual catalog will be printed, and a wide media coverage is ensured, notably through Africa 24, partner of the competition.
