Eschewing any particular architectural style or building material, Kengo Kuma aims "to create a certain type of place and a certain type of condition that can be experienced by the human body," arriving at "an architecture that utilizes everything, from traditional techniques to the most advanced technology." Based in Tokyo, Kuma began independent practice in 1987, and established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990. His extensive body of built work includes the Water/Glass Guest House, Atami, Japan; Hiroshige Museum, Batomachi, Japan; Stone Museum, Nasu, Japan; LVMH Osaka; Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum; Suntory Museum, Tokyo; Great (Bamboo) Wall, outside Beijing; and Asahi Broadcasting Headquarters, Osaka. Current projects include residential, commercial, and institutional work in Japan and abroad. Introduced and moderated by Kenneth Frampton. This lecture is organized by the Architectural League of New York and co-sponsored by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union.
