July 30-Sept 12, 2010 SCI-Arc Gallery Hitoshi Abe is widely considered to be one of the most interesting among the new generation of emerging Japanese architects. After graduating from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, he worked in the Los Angeles office of Coop Himmelb(l)au before obtaining his PhD from Tohoku University and setting up his own practice, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, in Sendai, Japan. Since the practice was established in 1992, Abe has won a wide variety of commissions across the country. He has also taught at several architecture schools, including the Tohoku Institute of Technology, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of California Los Angeles, where he is currently Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design. Known for architecture that is spatially complex and structurally innovative, the work of Atelier Hitoshi Abe has been published internationally and received numerous awards in Japan. Some of his key projects located in Japan include the Aoba-tei restaurant and the Sasaki Office Factory for Prosthetics in Sendai, the Miyagi Stadium in Rifu, SSM/Kanno Museum in Shiogama, the 9-tsubo House "Tall" in Kanagawa, and the Reihoku Community Hall in Kumamoto. A monograph "Hitoshi Abe Flicker" (TOTO) accompanied an exhibition of Abe's work at the Gallery MA in Tokyo in 2005. He is also the subject of Phaidon Press' new monograoph, "Hitoshi Abe," published in 2009. SCI-Arc
