The primary objective of the Al Jouf International Public Library Redesign Competition is to update the library’s function, use of space and design, in order to create an environment that accommodates for modern cultural flow and activity. The initiative aims to rethink the library’s function and transform its interiors from an outdated storage space for books, into a an open, flexible, energy efficient and sustainable community center.
The competition is open to international bids, to enable diversity of submissions, as well as explore alternative solutions for space optimization and usage. The top 3 submitted designs will receive cash rewards, with the winning firm also being awarded the contract for the library project.
Awards
1st Place – USD $50,000 + Contract
2nd Place – USD $37,500
3rd Place – USD $25,000

An unpaid competition in a country with atrocious human rights violations and a program that calls for separate spaces for men and women (wouldn't want to give the fairer sex access to scary things like science or politics!).Can't wait to see which architects compromise their supposed principals to go after this...assuming it's not already rigged, which I assume it is.

@hotelshinx the Al Jouf Public Library was actually one of the first institutions to allow male and females to engage with one another in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and has been open to both genders since its inception 50 years ago. Additionally the competition does award cash prizes to the top 3 winning submissions with the contract for the redesign being award to the top design.I recommend reading more about the initiative, the background and the objectives before making such comments and assumptions.
