10UP DESIGN BUILD COMPETITION
The Young Architects Forum of Atlanta (YAF Atlanta) is pleased to announce the Second Annual 2011 competition entitled 10Up. We’re calling on young designers to step up to the 10Up challenge!
Each year Modern Atlanta (MA) hosts a celebration of architecture and design with a week of events in and around the city of Atlanta. This year the executive directors and founders of MA have once again asked YAF Atlanta to create a competition for a temporary outdoor installation which will act as a beacon for this week of events. The structure is to be installed and operational during the MA 11 “Design is Human” events, currently planned for June 6-12, 2011. The project is not only to accentuate the series of events organized by MA, but will also be an event of its own celebrating young talents exhibiting their work to the public.
Competition Brief and Program
“Winning Submission will be built and published.”
The goal of this temporary installation is to create a unique spatial experience while also complementing the MA (Modern Atlanta) MA11 “Design is Human” event with a large scale design element accessible to hundreds of event patrons. To advocate architecture and encourage artistic endeavors throughout Atlanta in the future, YAF Atlanta is encouraging the opportunity to design and build a temporary outdoor installation. This installation will heighten the purpose and exposure of architecture, in order to construct a more educated and encouraging public.
Design Considerations
Special care should be taken in the selection of materials and construction techniques as those that can be prefabricated and assembled quickly (must be assembled within 24 hrs prior to the MA11 “Design is Human” Kickoff and disassembled within 24 hrs of MA11 “Design is Human” Closing) with simple tools and an assembly crew. Modularity is encouraged as pieces and parts of the project should be able to be moved and carried by one or two individuals. Consideration should also be given to the possibility of assembly/disassembly so the installation could potentially be reassembled in other locations in the future.
Buildable Area
No more than a 10’-0” x 10’-0” footprint within the site constrains allowed. The height is to be determined by the participant, but all aspects of public safety should be taken into account! The work should be able to stand independently while incorporating safety provisions as defined by local codes. Entries MUST take into account the process of assembly, takedown, portability and transportability. Natural elements can be considered in the design. Although not a requirement, participants are encouraged to engage materiality (the theme of MA11 “Design is Human”/”Design is Material”) and innovative program types.
Construction Budget
$5,000.00 US Dollars will be awarded to go toward fabrication costs of the winning entry.
Eligibility
Eligibility is open to national professionals and students in the fields of architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture and urban design. Professional entries must have at least one member of the team who has completed an accredited degree program in architecture. Student entries must have at least one member of the team who is currently enrolled in an accredited degree program in architecture. Further information can be located on the FAQ page on the website.
