Have your work built and Published

The Young Architects Forum of Atlanta (YAF Atlanta) is pleased to announce the third Annual 2012 competition entitled 10Up. We’re calling on young designers to step up to the 10Up challenge! Each year MA (Modern-Atlanta) hosts a celebration of architecture and design with a week of events in and around the city of Atlanta. This year the executive directors and founders of MA have once again asked the Young Architects Forum of Atlanta (YAF Atlanta) to create a competition for a temporary outdoor installation which will act as a beacon for this week of events. The structure is to be installed and operational during the MA 12 “Design is Human” events, currently planned for May 26-June 10, 2012. The project is not only to accentuate the series of events organized by MA, but will also be an event of its own celebrating young talents exhibiting their work to the public. Directors: Nathan Koskovich, 10UP Committee Chair, Ian Reves YAF Co-Chairman Adam Glenn, YAF Co-Chairman.

"Winning Submission will be built and published.”

The goal of this temporary installation is to create a unique spatial experience that complements the Modern Atlanta (MA) 2012 Design is Human event with a large scale design element accessible to hundreds of event patrons and thousands of beltline users.

Constraints

No more than a 10’-0” x 10’-0” footprint within the site constraints is allowed.
Height is to be determined by the participant, but all aspects of public safety should be accommodated.
Construction budget max of $5,000
Assembly and disassembly to happen in less than 24 hours
Though Volunteer labor may be available, the winning entry is responsible for executing assembly and disassembly.

Considerations

Special care should be taken in the selection of materials and construction techniques as those that can be prefabricated and installed quickly (must be installed and removed within 24hrs.) with simple tools and an untrained assembly crew. Modularity is encouraged as pieces and parts of the project should be able to be moved and carried by one or two individuals.  Consideration should also be given to the possibility of assembly/disassembly so the installation could potentially be reassembled in other locations in the future.

Site

The Atlanta BeltLine is a comprehensive redevelopment and mobility project that will shape the way Atlanta grows throughout the next several decades. The project provides a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit along a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown and connecting 45 neighborhoods directly to each other. The Atlanta BeltLine is the most comprehensive economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta and among the largest most wide-ranging redevelopment projects currently underway in the United States.

Bringing life back to this abandoned rail line before and during construction is a priority of Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., the non-profit corporation responsible for developing the Atlanta BeltLine. As such they have generously provided a section of the Atlanta Beltline at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Bill Kennedy Way. The shaded area in  the photo below shows the extent of the site
