OPENCALL 2026: Vertico Greenfield Residency
Applications are now open for the third edition of the Vertico Greenfield Residency, an annual program that gives universities access to industrial robotic fabrication technologies and supports the realization of experimental research projects at full scale.
Hosted at Vertico's facility in Eindhoven, the residency invites professors, assistant professors, studio supervisors, and research leaders to bring a group of students for an intensive week of fabrication, experimentation, and production. The initiative was created to address a challenge familiar to many academic institutions: limited access to large-scale robotic manufacturing equipment.
Opening Industrial Robotics to Academia
The Greenfield Residency was founded on a simple idea: innovative research should not be limited by access to technology.
Each year, selected academic teams gain direct access to Vertico's robotic systems, fabrication facilities, and technical expertise. Participants develop and manufacture a full-scale prototype while experiencing the realities of industrial robotic production.
While Vertico is best known for robotic concrete printing, the residency is not limited to concrete applications. Participants are encouraged to explore a broad range of fabrication methods, including additive manufacturing, robotic milling, clay printing, hybrid workflows, and experimental production techniques.
A Growing International Community
Since its launch, the Greenfield Residency has welcomed teams from Cairo University, Gebze Technical University & Isik University, German International University in Berlin, and Woodbury University in collaboration with HKS. The resulting projects have explored topics ranging from ecological systems and bio-receptive structures to integrated building systems and robotic fabrication research, demonstrating the wide range of ideas that can be developed through the program.
More importantly, the residency has created an environment where students can move beyond digital concepts and engage directly with fabrication, materials, and real-world production constraints. The experience of seeing a research project become a physical prototype often provides insights that are difficult to achieve in a purely academic setting.
Greenfield Residency 2026
Applications for Greenfield Residency 2026 are now open.
Selected teams will spend one week at Vertico's Eindhoven facility, working directly with industrial robotic systems and developing a full-scale prototype with support from the Vertico team.
The residency includes:
- Access to industrial robotic fabrication systems
- Full-scale prototype production
- Technical support from Vertico
- Access to Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper workflows
- One week of fabrication at Vertico's Eindhoven facility
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted by professors, assistant professors, studio supervisors, or research leaders on behalf of a student group.
Applicants are asked to submit a project proposal (maximum 500 words) together with preliminary visual material illustrating the proposed project, such as renders, diagrams, sketches, design drawings, material studies, or previous prototypes. The submission should outline the concept, research objectives, technical approach, and intended use of robotic fabrication.
Important Dates
Application deadline: July 26, 2026 Selection interviews: July 28 – August 7, 2026 Residency period: November 2026 (flexible scheduling)
