FLOW! Getting Around the Changing City

Sunday, Jun 17, 201810:30 AM — Saturday, Jun 23, 20183:30 PMEDT

Manhattan, Brooklyn & Governors Island New York, NY, US New York, NY, US | Manhattan, Brooklyn & Governors Island

How do you get around a city of millions? From Sunday, June 17th through Saturday, June 23rd, hop on board with Van Alen as we explore the present and future of urban mobility. Through a lively mix of public programs that bring together the city planners and urbanites of today with the city-makers of tomorrow, we will imagine new approaches to moving people through our streets, sidewalks, and waterways, and will get to test our stamina as we navigate the ups, downs, ins, and outs of our urban landscape. For the full schedule of events and registration, visit Van Alen's Spring Festival webpage: FLOW! Getting Around the Changing City.

The L-train shutdown will affect more than a quarter million subway riders in 2019. Sign up for "The Williamsburg Challenge," a tech-enhanced relay race on 6/17, to collect data and share insights on the best ways to get around during the shutdown. Details and registration at www.vanalen.org.

Take a guided bike tour through Brooklyn to see its changing neighborhoods on some of the borough's 300 miles of bike paths. "Life in the Bike Lane: Bike Brooklyn" starts 11 am Sunday, 6/17. Details and registration at www.vanalen.org.

Design and science are joining forces to better understand how people are affected by the urban environment. Attend "Mind the Gap: Improving Mobility Through Science and Design" at Van Alen Institute (30 W  22nd St) on Wednesday, June 20th, and learn more. Details and registration at www.vanalen.org.

Attend a rare screening of "The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces" at Van Alen (30 W 22nd St) on Tuesday, June 9th at 7 pm. Nidhi Gulati, Program Manager Transportation, Project for Public Spaces will moderate a discussion of this classic documentary. Details and registration at www.vanalen.org.

Focused on increased competition for street space, the inclusive or exclusive nature of ride-sharing, and the many opportunities and threats posed by autonomous transport, "The Politics of Mobility" will be a lively debate. Voices from urban design, city planning, architecture and more will illuminate the present and future of mobility. Attend the discussion on Monday, June 18th, 7-9 pm at Van Alen (30 W 22nd St). Details and registration at www.vanalen.org.
