Screening: “The Landlord”

Wednesday, Jun 20, 20187:30 PMPDT

Hammer Museum Los Angeles, CA, US Los Angeles, CA, US | Hammer Museum

Written by visionary black filmmaker Bill Gunn and the first film of Oscar-winning director Hal Ashby, The Landlord is both a coming-of-age tale and a social satire. When wealthy, white Elger Winthrop Enders buys a tenement brownstone in 1960s Brooklyn, he plans to kick out its predominantly black residents but instead becomes entangled—personally, romantically, and very messily—in the lives of his tenants. (1970, dir. Hal Ashby, 113 min.). A Q&A with Tisa Bryant and Ernest Hardy follows the screening.
