2°C Symposium 2020

LA’s Green New Deal Kept on Track by LA Architects at Their Third 2°C Symposium on Climate Change with Local Action in the Built Environment, supported across Californian Cities and LA-based NASA’s JPL 

Organized by the American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment Los Angeles (COTE LA) the third 2°C Symposium on Climate Change builds on Mayor’s Garcetti proposed LA City Green New Deal with actionable solutions in the Building and Urban Scales, supported by LA-grown NASA’s JPL findings.  The day-long 2°C Symposium on Climate Change returns for the third year to DWP’s John Ferraro Building, Friday, February 7^th, 2020.

The conference’s focus on building attainable solutions to mitigate the increasing effects of climate change within the built environment zero-in on Los Angeles’ Mayor Eric Garcetti Green New Deal issued to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2050.  Structured in a simple and efficient format, COTE LA’s third 2°C Symposium brings local stakeholders to the podium, from the Mayor’s key-players behind LA’s Green New Deal, to civic leaders across California, concluding with home-star NASA JPL.  The conference also offers a directly-immersive interactive session with themed lunch-tables, where attendees get a chance to be intimately informed about carbon-sequestration, net-zero, solar and building methodologies, and materials in an informal setting, relating over the hour-long lunch.  This year the 2°C Symposium also brings a highly curated exhibitor hall, presenting attendees the most innovative, if not obscure and under-funded, building materials created.  

Highlighted speakers present a focused building, urban and climate science approach ranging from local policy and incentives, to design methodologies and space-science:

Dominique Hargraves is the Deputy Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Los Angeles and one of the authors behind the City’s Green New Deal.  She will outline how Los Angeles has targeted carbon neutrality by 2050 and what measures the City of Los Angeles is instituting supportive of this target.

Kate Harrison was elected to the Berkeley City Council in March 2017 after a decades-long career in the public sector. In office she has been a champion for the climate, most recently authored legislation phasing out natural gas in new buildings. She is also involved with local politics outside of the Council as a founding member of the Berkeley Progressive Alliance and the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club.

Dr. Joshua B. Fisher is a Climate Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Science Lead of the ECOSTRESS Mission. He focuses on terrestrial ecosystems, water, carbon, and nutrient cycling using a combination of supercomputer models, satellite and airborne remote sensing, and field campaigns throughout the Amazon to the Arctic. He has been named one of the world's most influential researchers, in the top 0.1% of scientists for multiple papers that rank in the top 1% by citations.
