Beginning in the use of caves as shelter, natural rock and its transformation into cleanly honed slabs of stone has stood for protection, solidity, monumentality and timelessness. Stone, as a natural material, transforms with time yet stands its test. It holds the imprint of passage and use while it connotes eternity. We will explore the notion of a material that embodies local characteristics of place yet has fostered an industry around its import and export well beyond. This panel discussion will focus on uses of stone as an element that has relayed to us an understanding of ancient civilizations as well as contemporary explorations that allow for sustainable uses of this finite material and the developments in its architectural range.
