America is a nation of stuff. In our garages. Storage units. Lurking in the back of closets. Most often from places unknown or far from California.
Yet in the last few years Los Angeles has seen an emergence of design entrepreneurs who have created products, brands and retail experiences that are locally born and developed. Along with the explosion of tech start-ups and crowd-funding campaigns, there are local designers who understand consumers want to invest in products that have purpose; locally sourced, sustainable and made with a high level of craftsmanship.
On Thursday, November 10, Take Two’s Alex Cohen explores the future of consumerism and how designers are creating products to make our lives easier – and more socially conscious.
Participants:
Industrial designer Spencer Nikosey is a craftsman at heart, striving to bring a high level of performance, functionality and quality to KILLSPENCER's line of sustainable and waterproof backpacks, which are designed and manufactured in Silverlake.
Grant Delgatty has designed hundreds of products, from furniture and sporting goods to retail environments and consumer electronics. As chief creative officer and co-founder of URB-E, Delgatty has launched the world’s most compact foldable electric scooter, headquartered in Pasadena and made in California.
A design strategist and research consultant heralded as one of America's “Most Admired Educators” by DesignIntelligence, Karen Hofmann is chair of the Product Design Department at ArtCenter College of Design where she leads an innovative study abroad program with renowned international business school INSEAD, facilitating collaboration between designers and MBA students to develop new ideas for products and services.
