Richard Plunz’s landmark study, A History of Housing in New York City, traces the development of housing in New York from 1850 to the present day. First published in 1992, Plunz’s lively account investigates the housing of all classes, from the single-family house to tenements and high-rise apartment buildings, and places the story of housing within the context of the New York’s broader political and cultural development. A richly-illustrated and revised edition out this fall extends the scope of the book into the city’s recent history, adding three decades to the study, covering the recent housing bubble crisis, and the rebound and gentrification of the five boroughs. Join Plunz for a conversation about this work with two fellow experts on New York City housing: David Burney and Shola Olatoye.
David Burney, Associate Professor of Planning and Placemaking at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture
Shola Olatoye, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)
Richard Plunz, Professor, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University and Director, Urban Design Lab
