Los Angeles, CA, USRelated
The Architecture Lobby has announced the launching of a Los Angeles chapter, with a series of kick-off events and debates in October, which will focus on the state of architectural labor, the profession, education, and the public perception of architects.
The Architecture Lobby is a national organization of architectural workers advocating for the value of architectural work both within the general public was well as within the discipline. The Lobby was formed three years ago by young architects, students, and established practitioners as a decentralized organization across the country. Committed to upholding the highest standards of inclusiveness, democratic governance, and transparency, the Lobby is now a non-profit organization with hundreds of members and strong chapters active in New York City, Chicago, Tampa, Denver, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Architecture Lobby is pleased to add Los Angeles to this growing network of architectural workers, who are committed to fair labor practices within and without the profession.
On Friday, October 21 from 6-10pm, the Architecture Lobby will host a launch party in collaboration with the Jai & Jai Gallery to mark the launch of a new, dedicated Architecture Lobby Chapter in Los Angeles. The party is free and open to the public. Jai & Jai Gallery, one of Los Angeles’s most progressive architecture galleries, proudly supports the Lobby, and shares the goals and ambitions of The Architecture Lobby.
The party will also feature an exclusive LA screening of (Re)Working Architecture – a film documenting a performance by The Architecture Lobby during the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Copies of the Lobby's acclaimed book, Asymmetric Labors: The Economy of Architecture in Theory and Practice, first launched at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennial and currently featured at the Lisbon Triennial, will be available for sale at the event and also on Jai & Jai Gallery's webshop.
On Saturday, October 22, from 11am-3pm, the Architecture Lobby will host a “Think-In” at UCLA, where invited panelists and a professional facilitator will critically debate and discuss topics most integral to the aims of the Architecture Lobby, including: architecture labor and labor rights, the pros/cons of professionalization, the perceptions of architects within the media, and emerging pedagogical models. The Think-In is free and open to the public, and all interested students, academics, or practitioners are strongly encouraged to join the discussion.
