June 8, 2017 marks the 150th birthday of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright left a lasting impression in Alexandria, VA after designing the Pope-Leighey House in the 1940s, one of the first types of affordable housing for the middle class. The house was created after a couple with a modest budget sought after Wright’s talents and he agreed to create their dream home. Today this "Usonian" house is open to the public for tours and special events. In celebration of this special birthday this June, events will be taking place across the county, including Alexandria.
The Pope-Leighey House, located just 10 miles from Old Town, will host a 150th Birthday Picnic & Party fundraiser the night of June 8th, featuring treats from some of the region’s best cake makers, cocktails, music, a unique auction and much more. On July 12, the hilarious cocktail theater troupe Picnic Theater Company will present their version of Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever” in front of the house (picnic dinner available), and on August 27, the Pope-Leighey Picnic Series ends with a mid-century modern, family-style back-to-school picnic on the grounds of the house.
