The Public Interest Design Institute is a two-day course that will provide knowledge and training on methods of how design can address the critical issues faced by communities. Five national experts will present examples from around the world. The research is funded by the American Institute of Architects 2011 Latrobe Award. The field of architecture is quickly growing past the success of the green design. Public Interest Design is an emerging practice that addresses the social, economic and environmental issues communities face today. The Public Interest Design Institute Series will present best practices formed around the Social Economic Environmental Design (SEED) evaluation, a set of standards that takes a holistic, creative approach to design driven by community needs. Like LEED has done, the SEED process provides a step-by-step aid for those who want to undertake and better accomplish design in the public's interest. Attendees will gain the training and expertise needed to be at the forefront of this emerging field. Instructors:
- Bryan Bell, Founder & Executive Director, Design Corps, Raleigh NC.
- Barbara Brown Wilson, Ph.D., Director, Center for Sustainable Development, The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture.
- Sergio Palleroni, Senior Fellow, Center for Sustainable Solutions at Portland State University.
- David Perkes Founding Director, Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, Biloxi, MS.
