New exhibition celebrating the 50th Anniversary of New York’s Landmarks Law Opens March 14, 2015 New York City is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Landmarks Law – the law which has led to the rediscovery and recognition of more than 30,000 architectural and historic structures throughout the City. The New York Transit Museum is contributing to the celebration by mounting an exhibition focusing on the City’s better known and largely unknown transportation landmarks. The exhibit will open March 14, 2015 at the Transit Museum’s Gallery Annex at Grand Central Terminal. Many of New York City’s most important landmarks are linked to its transportation history. As an island city, New York depends on its complex transit system – not just to guarantee the mobility of its residents, but also to facilitate commerce. The transportation industry has, in fact, given the City some of its finest architectural monuments. The new exhibit tells the story of these transportation landmarks, and of their rescue and rehabilitation – railroad terminals, subway stations, airports, ferry and pier buildings, bridges, and landscaped parkways. It focuses attention on the familiar major monuments such as Grand Central Terminal but also on less well-known sites such as the High Bridge, Macomb’s Dam Bridge, the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport, the Battery Maritime Building and Ocean Parkway, helping us all recognize the importance of these transportation landmarks. In conjunction with the exhibition, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24th at the Museum’s Downtown Brooklyn location, the Transit Museum will present a special AfterHours program, A Lasting Legacy: Historic Preservation and the MTA. The Museum will bring together MTA Project Administrator Hollie Wells and Historic Preservationist Sara McIvor, to discuss the large-scale preservation efforts and unanticipated and exciting discoveries in their work maintaining the host of structures, stations, bridges, and tunnels protected under the City’s landmarks law. Following the discussion, Museum Educators will lead a behind-the-scenes look at the preserved 1936 IND Court Street Station which houses the Museum, and explore the station’s significance and historic features. AfterHours program tickets are available at: https://51281.blackbaudhosting.com/51281/ALasting-Legacy-Historic-Preservation-and-the-MTA. This exhibition is made possible by American Express and by the New York State Council on the Arts Architecture + Design Program with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Additional support comes from PBDW ARCHITECTS and di Domenico + Partners, LLC. Museum exhibitions and programs are made possible, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
