November 13, 2008 Doors open at 6:00pm, Presentation at 6:30pm, Reception to follow Commonwealth Club, 595 Market Street, 2nd Floor Please join the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the Office of Mayor Gavin Newsom and others to hear an inspiring presentation by Gil Peñalosa about how major cities around the world are reclaiming their streets for people and how San Francisco can build more livable, successful streets. Mr. Peñalosa is a key leader of the Ciclovia movement in Bogota, Colombia, on which our popular Sunday Streets program was modeled. Working with his brother, former Mayor Enrique Peñalosa, he was instrumental in the Bogota miracle to reclaim the city for people by building hundreds of kilometers of bike paths, widening sidewalks, and rejuvenating the City's transit and parks systems. Mr. Peñalosa will discuss how more livable streets promote health, environmentalism, and increased economic vitality and competitiveness. Cities all over the world are following Colombia's lead and closing streets to cars, and opening them to people, with dramatic and successful results. Learn how Peñalosa is helping cities such as San Francisco become part of this international phenomenon of active, healthy streets for active, healthy living. Tickets are available in advance (highly recommended as the event is expected to sell out): tickets.commonwealthclub.org; and at the door.
