The Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University presents: Matter, Light, and Form Architectural Photographs of Wayne Thom, 1968-2003 Architecture, through the lens of Wayne Thom’s camera, is sculpture. For more than thirty years, Thom has captured, in image, the surfaces and depths, the shapes and textures, the contrasts and reflections of the objects of the built environment within their urban galleries. A patient reveler in the natural staging of the atmosphere, he elicits near surreal compositions of materials turned canvas for celestial color and glow. Matter, Light, and Form showcases three such registers of Thom’s distinguished presentation of structure – towers as gleaming monoliths, pavilions as luminous vessels, and plazas as molds for and shapers of open space. His still life depictions unveil an idealized portrait of the inhabitable world, exposing the ultimate ambition of the architectural work as that which renders existence as art.
