Sukkahville 2015 winners to be exhibited in Toronto next month

By Bustler Editors|

Friday, Aug 14, 2015

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot is observed through the construction of traditional domestic structures known as sukkahs. The Kehilla Residential Programme celebrates with a little modern twist in their annual Sukkahville competition, which invites architects, students, and artists to propose contemporary interpretations of the sukkah for the Nathan Phillips Square in front of Toronto’s City Hall. The open competition helps raise funds and public awareness for the Kehilla Residential Programme's Rental Assistance Program, its affordable housing initiative.

In designing their sukkahs — which are deeply rooted in the timeless concept of creating a sense of dwelling — entrants had to consider how to innovatively balance old and new, while also maintain a diverse and strong sense of space and place. Moreover, the competition promotes the ever-growing need for accessible, affordable housing.

Read on for more.

At the end of the competition, eight proposals were selected as the winning designs, which will then be constructed and temporarily exhibited for Sukkot festivities in September.

Scroll down to have a look at them.
