The Black Rock City Ministry of Urban Planning, the organizing committee of the one and only Burning Man festival at Black Rock Desert, wants to change their plans a bit for future festivals — master plans, that is. Although the current C-shaped design has worked for the Burner community for awhile, the BRC Ministry set up the Black Rock City Street Plan Design Competition to seek new city plans that explore spatial and geometric possibilities.
Open to everyone, the international two-stage competition will officially begin this fall, while implementation of the new city plan — if one is selected — is slated for 2017 at the earliest. In the meantime, pre-registration for the competition is open.
Scroll down for more details.
Stage One (October-December 31, 2015): Entrants will submit a single page drawing, sketch, or rendering of their design, along with a brief statement about its intent and ideas for further development. The initial entries will be published online for a public vote, and the top 10 entries will advance to stage two.
Stage Two (January-May 2016): Entrants will develop detailed street-level designs, with an emphasis on traffic flow, logistics, and safety considerations. Stage one will also be open to entrants who want to submit elements, such as roundabouts, to be incorporated into larger scale plans. These submissions will be available to stage two entrants to incorporate into their plans.
The detailed designs from stage two will again be put up for a popular vote and public feedback. In May 2016, the designs — along with the voting data and comments — will be published and formally submitted to the Burning Man management team for review. The designs will also be displayed as an art installation on the playa in 2016.
The Burning Man organization will make the final decision on the winning design based on a combination of popularity, logistics, and space considerations (including the option to retain the current city plan).
