The Rome Prize winners gather for a group photo after the ceremony. Included at far right are AAR Board Chair Mary Margaret Jones (of Hargreaves Associates) and President Mark Robbins, and AAR Director Kim Bowes (back row, 6th from left)

It's that time of year again when The American Academy in Rome announces the winners of the Rome Prize. The prestigious annual fellowship supports the independent endeavors of young artists and scholars working in the arts and humanities. Awards are given to scholars working in the following disciplines supported by the Academy: Literature, Music Composition, Visual Arts, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, and Historic Preservation and Conservation, as well as Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern, and Modern Italian Studies.

A jury of distinguished peers evaluated nearly 900 applications from 46 U.S. States, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico before selecting the 31 winners for 2016. The winners were honored during the Rome Prize Ceremony at the Kaplan Hall Auditorium at the New School in New York. Winners then receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board at the Academy's 11-acre campus in Rome, where they can pursue their work for a period spanning from six months up to two years.

Additionally, six more winners were revealed as the 2016-17 Italian Fellows. The program selects Italian artists and scholars to live and work collaboratively in the Academy community alongside their American counterparts.
